Jorn Utzon was born in 1918 in Copenhagen. He grew up next to a large naval shipyard in Aalborg, managed by his father Aage Utzon, who was also a naval architect and yacht designer. In 1942 Jorn Utzon completed his studies at the Royal Academy for Architects in Copenhagen, moved to Sweden, where he worked with various vell-known architects till the end of the war. After extensive travels in Morocco, USA and Mexico from 1946-49 he established his own practice in 1949.
In 1957 Jorn Utzon won the international competition for a new Opera House in Sydney, a project that took up his time until he left Australia in 1966. Through this work, Jorn utzon aquired a thorough knowledge of all aspects of theatre planning and design. Working concentrated and committed for 9 years with the then World experts on acoustics, theatre planning, stage machinery, lighting and not least with a large number of the most prominent performers of the time, he and his office became very proficient in dealing with all aspects of theatre design.
After Sydney Jorn Utzon continued to develop the new theatre complex for Zurich, Switzerland, a project he and his staff had won in an international competion. Within this project was also integrated the solution to a traffic-problem in the City, where 6 roads met in an open square, Kunsthaus, completely destroying this, potentially beautiful square in Zurich. Unfortunately the project was not realized, as a new lot of politicians of the City, decided to remodel the old theatre.
The next, 1971-83, large project, won in an international competition, was for the National Assembly for Kuwait, done in collaboration with Jan Utzon. Although not a theatre, this building complex included an Assembly Hall, not unlike a theatre in its function and acoustical demands. This was completed in 1983. A 150000 sq metre building, completed on time and within budget.-
A church in Denmark was completed in 1975, also a "venue" and assembly place for some hundreds of people, with special demands on acoustics, etc. A 1800 sq metre building, completed on time and within budget.
In 1997 "Utzon Architects" completed a new theatre/concert hall in Esbjerg, in Denmark. The theatre is a multifunction room with a seating capacity of 1100 for concerts and 850 for theatrical performances. Stage and stage tower are dimensioned to take full versions of performances from the National Theatre in Copenhagen. Proper acoustics for the different functions is achieved through a number of ceiling elements that can be raised or lowered to adjust the volume of the venue.
A studio theatre for 300 and a recording studio for 150 people are included in the project, together with the necessary space for administration, wardrobes, performers spaces and lobbies. A 9000 sq metre building, completed on time and within budget.
Since 1998 Jorn Utzon has, together with his son Jan Utzon and the architectural practice of Johnson, Pilton, Walker of Sydney, been involved in the planning of the refurbishment of the Sydney Opera House, including a project for a complete make-over of the Opera Theatre. An ongoing commitment from all involved.
